Parent appreciation post.

Growing up, my friends always viewed my household as “the house with no rules” - we could eat what we wanted when we wanted, sleep when we wanted, watch TV or get on the computer when we wanted, we didn’t go to school… And while all of that was true (and awesome), we did have a few rules, and I think they were the absolute best rules you can have in a household.

  • “Shut up” and “stupid” are swear words. They were the only things Jake and I weren’t allowed to say. You never attack anyone’s sense of self, period. I think this is a big part of the reason why I’m never afraid to speak my mind and I have so much confidence in my abilities. No one ever told me I was stupid or that I shouldn’t say what I think.
  • No yelling. My parents never yelled at us, we never yelled at them, we never yelled at each other. And today I realized that in the 3 years of our relationship, Jordan and I have never once yelled at each other, because I know that’s not how you solve a conflict.
  • Read for 30 minutes everyday. Every day after we finished our school work, Jake and I were each responsible for at least a half an hour of personal reading. It could be a book, a magazine, a graphic novel - as long as it was paper in our hands.

Those are the only 3 real rules that I remember from growing up, and all of them still have practical application in my life today.
